Overview
An antique silverplate coffee pot by Rogers, Smith & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The pear-shaped body sits on a round pedestal foot and has bands of fine engine-turned engraving. A scrolled cartouche on the front is left blank. Beaded rims run around the foot, the shoulder, the neck and the hinged domed lid, which is topped with a tall finial. The spout is cast with scrolls and leaves and ends in a small animal head. The cast scroll handle has two white insulator rings. It makes a fine centerpiece for a sideboard, buffet or mantel, or part of a tea or coffee display.
Background
Rogers, Smith & Co. was an American silverplate maker based in Hartford, Connecticut, before it moved to New Haven in 1862. Pieces with the Hartford mark are generally dated to about 1857โ1862. The underside is stamped with the round beaded mark "Rogers, Smith & Co. Hartford, Ct." and "No. 1835", which is the model number.
Condition
Good antique condition, with no obvious dents, splits or loose parts, and the lid hinge works. There is tarnish throughout and some wear to the plating, mainly on the neck and foot, with small surface marks from age and use. Please see all photos.
