Overview
An antique Indian copper water vessel, hand raised from heavy sheet copper. The body rises from a wide, flat base and tapers to a narrow waist, then opens into a thick rolled rim with a small pinched pouring lip on one side. The outside has a warm, bright copper finish with fine horizontal tool marks from the raising and turning. Inside, the upper rim keeps its old grey tin lining, and the lower interior has a deep green verdigris patina. It works well as a planter, a vase for dried stems, or a display piece on a hearth, shelf or sideboard.
Background
Copper vessels like this were everyday household pieces in India, used to carry and store water. Their insides were traditionally coated with tin (kalai) to protect the contents. This one is unmarked and hand made, with a separate flat base set into the body. It weighs about 1 lb 11.8 oz.
Condition
Good antique condition, with no holes or splits, and it sits flat. There are small dents and dings, light scratches, some waviness along the rolled rim, worn tin lining, and verdigris inside and on the base. A faded old paper label remains on one side. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The vessel is 8.5 x 8.0 x 8.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 1 lb 11.8 oz.
