Overview
An antique American silverplate teapot by Forbes Silver Co. of Meriden, Connecticut. It has a rounded pear-shaped body with a tall neck and a hinged, stepped dome lid with a beaded rim. One side is engraved with a curling paisley-shaped scroll outlined in fine beading, surrounded by sprays of small flowers and leaves. The spout and handle are cast with leafy scroll relief, and the lid is topped with a tall cast finial. The silver has an even, unpolished dark tarnish with some warm toning on the body. It makes a good display piece on a sideboard, mantel or shelf, or a vase for dried flowers.
Background
Engraved silverplate tea and coffee pots were a standard part of American dining rooms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The base carries the Forbes Silver Co. eagle-head mark with "QUADRUPLE" and the pattern number 177, plus some old hand-scratched marks. Forbes Silver Co. was set up in 1894 by the Meriden Britannia Company and later continued under International Silver, so this pot dates to about 1894 or later, most likely late 1890s to early 1900s. Quadruple plate was a common marking of the period for a heavier coat of silver plate.
Condition
Good antique condition. The lid opens and closes on its hinge, and the body, spout and handle have no visible cracks or repairs. There is overall tarnish, scratches and light wear to the silver, with some mottled wear on the base, consistent with age and use. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The teapot measures 7.8 x 8.0 x 5.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 1 lb 3.9 oz (564 g).
