Overview
An antique silverplate sugar bowl and creamer set by Barbour Silver Co., marked quadruple plate. Both pieces have round, squat bodies decorated with raised scrolls, leaves and flowers, and each stands on four scrolled feet. The handles have a twisted rope pattern with leaf details where they join the body, and the creamer's spout has a cast floral ornament. The sugar bowl has two handles and comes without a lid. The surface shows warm toning and tarnish with some colorful iridescence, which gives the pieces an old, unpolished look. They suit a tea or coffee table, a sideboard, or a display shelf.
Background
Footed sugar and creamer sets with scroll and floral decoration were a popular part of American silverplate tea services in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Barbour Silver Co. was founded in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1892 and became part of International Silver Co. in 1898. Each piece is stamped on the underside with the round mark "BARBOUR SILVER CO. QUADRUPLE" around "SILVER", and one piece is also numbered 1006. Together they weigh about 1 lb 7.4 oz.
Condition
Good antique condition, with no dents or repairs visible. There are scratches throughout, tarnish and toning across the outside, and some spotting and discoloration inside the creamer and the sugar bowl. Please see all photos.
