Overview
An original copy of The Washington Post from Thursday, December 26, 1991, the morning after Mikhail Gorbachev resigned and the Soviet Union came to an end. The banner headline reads "Gorbachev Resignation Ends Soviet Era; U.S. Recognizes Russia, Other Republics," above a large photograph of Gorbachev at his desk and a photograph of the Russian flag being raised over the Kremlin. Above the headline are short quotes from Gorbachev and President Bush on either side of a printed Russian flag. The lower half of the front page carries David Remnick's Moscow report "At the End, 'For Me, They Have Poisoned the Air,'" along with local and national stories. The paper is unframed and would suit a collection of Cold War or Russian history, or frame well for a study, office or library wall.
Background
Gorbachev announced his resignation on December 25, 1991, about 74 years after the Bolshevik Revolution, and handed control of the Soviet nuclear arsenal to Russian President Boris Yeltsin. This issue (115th Year, No. 21, 25 cents) carries front-page reports by Michael Dobbs in Moscow ("Nuclear Command Shifted to Yeltsin") and Don Oberdorfer ("Bush Hails Change, Praises Ex-Leader"), on President Bush's televised Oval Office speech granting U.S. recognition to Russia and other former republics. Below the fold are "For D.C. Family, Homicide Record Means Life Without 'Buddy,'" Howard Kurtz's "We Want News, McPaper Discovers" on USA Today, and the "Goodwill Toward Them" holiday photograph. This is an original period newspaper, not a reprint. We have not counted the pages, so please see the photos for what is included.
Condition
Good vintage condition for newsprint. The paper has light, even toning, the original horizontal fold, and light wear and a few small nicks along the edges. Please see all photos.
