Overview

A lot of two original Washington Post newspapers from two big moments in the paper's history. The first is the Friday, November 10, 1989 issue with the banner headline "East Germany Opens Berlin Wall and Borders, Allowing Citizens to Travel Freely to the West," above a large photograph of crowds on the Wall at the Brandenburg Gate. The second is the Wednesday, January 29, 1992 Super Bowl XXVI section (page E1), with the final score of Washington's 37–24 win over the Buffalo Bills and the headline "For One Day... the Best Team in Football" over a color photograph of Coach Joe Gibbs hugging offensive line coach Jim Hanifan. The back page of the section has a large color photograph of Art Monk in the end zone and a Thomas Boswell column. Both papers are unframed. They would suit a collection of Cold War history or Washington football memorabilia, or frame well for an office, den or game room wall.

Background

The Berlin Wall opened on the night of November 9, 1989, one of the turning points at the end of the Cold War. This issue (112th Year, No. 340, 25 cents) carries front-page reporting from East Berlin by Robert J. McCartney and "Soviets Clear East Berlin Policy Shift" by David Remnick in Moscow, and below the fold "Deng Resigns His Last Party Post" along with local stories on Fairfax County and the D.C. Council. Super Bowl XXVI was played in Minneapolis on January 26, 1992, and gave Joe Gibbs his third Super Bowl title with Washington, with quarterback Mark Rypien named the game's MVP. The section's lead story is by Richard Justice. These are original period newspapers, not reprints. We have not counted the pages in either paper, so please see the photos for what is included.

Condition

Good vintage condition for newsprint. Both papers show even tan toning, a little stronger along the edges, and the original folds. The 1989 paper has light wear and small chips along its lower edge, and the 1992 section has light creasing and edge wear. Please see all photos.
