Overview

A lot of two original Washington Post newspapers covering two big moments in Washington political history. The first is the Friday, August 9, 1974 Final edition with the banner headline "Nixon Resigns" and "Ford Assumes Presidency Today" below it. The lower half of its front page has a large photograph of President Nixon embracing his daughter Julie, "A Solemn Change," "Era of Good Feeling," and a note on "The Nixon Years," a 24-page special section inside that day. The second is the Friday, January 19, 1990 Final edition with the banner headline "Barry Arrested on Cocaine Charges In Undercover FBI, Police Operation," above a photograph of Mayor Marion Barry being escorted into his home after his arrest. Both papers are unframed. They would suit a collection of Watergate, presidential or D.C. history, or frame well for a study, office or library wall.

Background

Richard Nixon announced his resignation on the evening of August 8, 1974, after two years of the Watergate scandal, and Gerald Ford was sworn in the next day. This issue (97th Year, No. 247, 15 cents) carries the lead report by Carroll Kilpatrick and a report on Ford by Jules Witcover. D.C. Mayor Marion Barry was arrested on January 18, 1990, at the Vista International Hotel in a joint FBI and D.C. police operation. That issue (113th Year, No. 45, 25 cents) carries front-page reports by Sharon LaFraniere, R.H. Melton and Michael Abramowitz, and Steve Twomey, and below the fold "Gorbachev Defends Use of Military" by David Remnick and "New Look, Old Mission at Lujan's Department." These are original period newspapers, not reprints. We have not counted the pages in either paper, so please see the photos for what is included.

Condition

Fair vintage condition for the 1974 paper and good for the 1990 paper. The 1974 paper has heavy tan toning, tears along the top edge, and a torn piece at the upper corner of an inside section. The 1990 paper has light, even toning, the original fold, and a few small punctures along the lower edge of the front page. Please see all photos.
