Overview A commanding, monumental vintage wooden sculpture carved in the dramatic architectural tradition of Yoruba palace veranda posts (opo ogbon). Standing an impressive 37 inches tall, this multi-tiered figural grouping is carved from a single substantial trunk of high-density hardwood. Evoking the celebrated virtuosity of early 20th-century master carvers such as Olowe of Ise, the composition features an imposing, towering female consort standing protectively behind a seated figure crowned with avian iconography. Exhibiting weathered matte polychrome pigments in rustic tones of ochre, terracotta, muted green, and chalk white, this sculptural tour de force makes an extraordinary focal point for Eclectic Global, Wabi-Sabi, Modern Primitive, or high-end gallery interiors. Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in the specialized carving compounds of southwest Nigeria's Ekiti region, complex multi-figural posts were traditionally commissioned to embellish royal palaces and principal courtyards. The carving utilizes traditional Yoruba hieratic proportions, where physical scale communicates spiritual authority and lineage importance. The exaggerated, elongated necks and unified ovoid head forms serve to visually elevate the head—regarded in Yoruba cosmology as the sacred vessel of ase (inner spiritual power, sacred destiny, and dignity). The prominent bird perched at the summit of the coiffure represents transformational spiritual power and the watchful protection of ancestral mothers (Awon Iya Wa). Detailed throughout with low-relief facial scarification marks, beaded royal collar patterns, and traditional coiffure textures, the sculpture is a profound tribute to Yoruba chieftaincy aesthetics and lineage continuity. Condition & Surface Character • Carved from a solid, heavy single log of dense hardwood, maintaining exceptional structural integrity throughout. • Authentic age-appropriate surface wear, displaying natural wood grain drying checks, minor organic splits, and a beautifully oxidized matte patina. • Retains original traces of multi-tone polychrome pigment within the carved reliefs, showing naturalistic fading and surface desiccation from age. • Solid carved circular base stands entirely stable and level, perfect for commanding floor, entryway, or pedestal display. Dimensions & Weight • Height: 37 inches • Width/Diameter: 14.5 inches • Depth: 12 inches
