Overview
A matched pair of vintage California pottery figural bud vases by Walter Wilson, titled "Ho-Jai" and "Joy Ming" on their bases. Ho-Jai wears a wide conical sun hat with orange brush strokes, a pale yellow jacket with black frog closures, black trousers and white slippers, and he holds a tall wood-textured vase painted with black brush designs. Joy Ming wears a lilac jacket, black trousers, pink slippers and a cap trimmed with molded pink roses, and she holds a ribbed pale yellow vase with similar black brushwork. Both figures stand on stepped, glossy black oval bases, and each vase opening can hold a small stem or dried flowers. The pair suits a mantel, bookshelf, dresser or display cabinet.
Background
Hand-decorated figural vases and planters like these were popular in American homes in the mid-20th century, and many were made by small California potteries. Each base is hand-lettered in black: "Ho-Jai by Walter Wilson Calif" and "Joy Ming by Walter Wilson Calif." The pieces are slip-cast and hollow, with drain openings underneath.
Condition
Good vintage condition. There is a chip on the edge of Ho-Jai's hat brim, light wear on the unglazed rims of the bases, and some old label residue under Joy Ming. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each figure is 9 x 4.5 x 3.8 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs about 1 lb 13.6 oz together.
