Overview
A vintage Unitron UMP-943 phase contrast turret condenser for a compound microscope. The black body carries the Unitron name and the UMP-943 model number, and the top lens is marked 1.25. A knurled turret ring in the side slot clicks through its positions, with one position marked 100. Underneath is a many-leaf iris diaphragm that opens and closes with a side lever. Two knurled centering screws and a side locking pin come with it, and the top lens sits in a brass-tone mounting ring. It suits someone restoring or upgrading a Unitron phase microscope, or a collector of vintage scientific instruments.
Background
Unitron sold microscopes and optics for school, laboratory and industrial use through much of the 20th century. A phase contrast condenser places a ring of light under the specimen to match the phase objective above it, which helps show detail in clear, unstained samples. This condenser is marked UNITRON and UMP-943 on the body and 1.25 on the top lens. It has not been tested on a microscope, so please check fit with your instrument.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The turret clicks through its positions and the iris opens and closes. The black finish has rubs and small paint losses, the brass-tone ring is tarnished, and the thumbscrews show wear and light corrosion. There is some white residue on the rim around the top lens. The optics have not been cleaned or tested. Please see all photos.
