Overview

A vintage Turkish tinned copper hammam soap box, also called a kildan. The oval box is hand hammered with wavy horizontal ribs around the body and a domed, lobed lid. A swing bail handle sits on top, the lid is hinged at the back, and the front closes with a riveted hasp with a rounded cap. The base is pierced with a ring of drainage holes. The worn silver-tone tinning against the warm copper underneath gives it a layered, aged look. It suits a bathroom vanity, dresser, shelf or curio cabinet, and it still works as a soap box or a small storage box.

Background

Lidded copper boxes like this were carried to the hammam, the Turkish public bath, to hold soap and bathing things. The holes in the base let water drain so the soap could dry. Copper bath ware was traditionally coated inside and out with tin. This box is unmarked. It is made of hand-hammered copper with a tinned finish, with a riveted hinge, a bail handle and a hasp.

Condition

Good vintage condition with no significant damage. The hinge, bail handle and hasp all work. Much of the tinning has worn away on the raised ribs, rim and lid, showing the copper underneath. There are small dents and handling marks, light green oxidation around some seams, a couple of small surface spots on the front, and some red marks inside the lid. Please see all photos.

Dimensions & Weight

The box is 4.6 x 6 x 3.8 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 13.6 oz.
