Overview
A vintage hand-painted Turkish pottery charger from Kütahya, decorated with Arabic calligraphy in black on a white ground. The central roundel holds the Basmala ("In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"). Around it, eight smaller roundels carry the names Allah, Muhammad, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Hasan and Husayn. The roundels sit on a cobalt blue ground with small flower motifs, framed by a turquoise braided band and a wide border of flowers and leafy scrolls in cobalt, coral red, green and white. The plate comes with a dark wood stand for a shelf or table, and it also has a hanging cord on the back for wall display. It suits a mantel, bookshelf, sideboard or gallery wall.
Background
Kütahya, in western Turkey, has been a centre for hand-painted pottery for centuries, and its workshops often make plates with calligraphy and Ottoman-style floral borders. The same eight names shown here also appear on the large calligraphy roundels inside Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and they are a popular subject in Turkish decorative art. The back of this plate is impressed with the workshop mark "HUZUR ÇİNİ / FABRİKASI / KÜTAHYA". The reverse shows the turning rings from the potter's wheel, and the hanging cord is threaded through holes in the foot rim.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The painted front is clean and bright, with light wear consistent with age. Please see all photos.
