Overview
A large vintage hand-hammered copper pot with a tinned interior, in the classic flared-rim form. It has a wide, flat base and a body that narrows as it rises to a straight neck, topped by a broad flat rim that flares outward. Bands of incised lines circle the neck and the lower body. The outside has a warm copper color with light spotting and touches of green verdigris, while the inside keeps its tinning, now darkened to a soft gray. It has no handles, which gives it a clean, simple outline. It makes a strong display piece on a kitchen island, hearth, sideboard or console, and it works well as a planter cover or utensil holder.
Background
Hand-hammered, tin-lined copper pots like this were everyday cookware across Turkey and the wider Middle East, and the inside was tinned so the copper could be used with food. This pot is unmarked. It is hand hammered from sheet copper, with incised bands at the neck and base and a tinned interior and rim, and it weighs 3 lb 4.1 oz.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no significant damage, and it should be able to hold water. There is a pale line where the rim joins the neck. The tinning inside has darkened and is worn in places, with spots of green oxidation near the rim. The outside has light spotting, small scuffs and some green oxidation, and the base has a bright scratch and patchy green oxidation. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The pot is 8 inches high and 9.8 inches across the base. It weighs 3 lb 4.1 oz.
