Overview
A pair of vintage mask bookends, each with a bold, stylized face mounted on a sturdy L-shaped metal bracket. The masks have large round eyes framed by raised rings with small triangles beside them, a long straight nose, a zigzag band across the top, and an open oval mouth ringed with raised dots. Rows of small pierced holes run across the forehead and cheeks, so light shows through the masks. The two faces are mirror images, one turned slightly to each side, and the finish is a bronze-gold paint with brighter gold highlights on the raised areas. They suit a bookshelf, desk, mantel or a mid-century or tiki-themed room.
Background
Mask designs drawing on African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian art were popular in mid-20th-century decor, and a matching pair of these bookends has been catalogued as mid-century. This pair is unmarked. Each mask is cast in one piece and hollow at the back, and the pair is heavy at about 3.5 lb per bookend, with black felt under the bases.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs seen. There is light wear to the finish, a few small scuffs and paint losses along the base edges and corners, and a dark mark on the back of one mask. The felt bottoms are intact with light wear and some lint. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each bookend is about 6.5 x 6 x 2.5 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs about 7 lb 1 oz.
