Overview
A lot of three vintage hand-painted pottery animal figurines from Mexico and Costa Rica. The first is a classic Tonalá owl in burnished clay, with a round pebble shape, big orange eyes ringed in black, a grey beak and fanned feather lines in blue-grey and orange. Its back is painted with a large flower and leaves in blue, pink and teal. The second is a glazed Tonalá resting deer, with folded legs and upright ears, painted with flowers, leaves and berries in blue, yellow, pink and green on a pale green glaze, with black striped details. The third is a Costa Rican toucan with a smooth matte black body and a bright yellow, orange and red beak. Together they make a colorful grouping for a shelf, desk or windowsill.
Background
Tonalá, in Jalisco, Mexico, is one of the country's best-known pottery towns, famous for its burnished clay animals, and the owl is one of its signature forms. The owl is unsigned and has a vent hole in the base. The deer is signed "RS Mexico" in black under the glaze on the base. The toucan is hand-inscribed in white on the base "Gloria a Dios / Costa Rica / An." ("Glory to God"). These pieces date from about the 1970s to the 1990s.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs. The owl has light wear to its painted surface and a small dark mark at the top edge of its back. The deer has fine crazing in the glaze and small rubs to the black paint on the ears and muzzle. The toucan has a few small paint rubs on the base. Please see all photos.
