Overview
A vintage hand-carved wood plant stand in the form of an Asian elephant carrying a square seat on its back. The seat has a carved border of flame and leaf motifs above an arched apron, and it rests on a saddle blanket carved with crisscross lines, leaf scrolls and rope straps. Fine incised lines give texture to the head, ears, trunk and legs, and the eyes and toenails are painted white. The wood has a warm honey-brown finish with darker tones in the carving. It works as a plant stand, a small side table or a low stool, and it suits a living room, sunroom, entryway or covered porch.
Background
Carved wooden elephant stands like this were made in Thailand for homes and for export through the later 20th century. This one is unmarked. It is heavy carved wood, weighing 28.2 lb, and dates to circa 1960-1990.
Condition
Good vintage condition with wear. One tusk is missing, leaving an open socket; the remaining tusk is carved wood. Cracks run across the top of the seat and down the front into the saddle, and they are stable. There are chips and small areas of finish loss on the edges of the seat, the ears, the trunk and the feet. The carved octagonal stand it sits on in the photos is a display prop and is not included.
