Cultural & Historical Background
This impressive, large-format hand-hammered copper wall plaque depicts one of South Asia’s most celebrated cultural celebrations: the historic Kandy Esala Perahera (Festival of the Tooth Relic). Master metal artisans crafted the panel from heavy-gauge solid sheet copper using meticulous hand-hammering and deep hand-chased relief (repoussé) techniques. The intricate composition is set against a finely stippled background, producing a striking visual contrast between glowing copper highlights and silvery-darkened recessed textures.
At the center of the tray, three richly caparisoned parade elephants march in ceremonial majesty. The central elephant carries the sacred casket beneath a ornate ransivige (covered canopy), flanked by attendant elephants, flag bearers, sun-and-moon banner holders, and temple officials. Surrounding the central procession—and lining the wide flared border—are over forty individually detailed Kandyan Ves dancers and traditional drummers performing ceremonial rhythms. A prominent hand-engraved Sinhala script cartouche at the top center commemorates the sacred pageant.
Fitted with a heavy-duty brass mounting bracket securely attached to the reverse side, this tray plaque is ready for immediate display. Its dramatic 14-by-12-inch dimensions, dense narrative storytelling, and rich coppery luster make it an extraordinary statement piece for global-eclectic, bohemian, or traditional interiors.
Vintage Condition Notes
Presents in excellent vintage condition with vibrant, authentic character. The copper surface exhibits a bright coppery-bronze glow with minor surface handling wear, light micro-scratches, and subtle natural oxidation spots along the reverse rim consistent with mid-to-late 20th-century metalwork. The integrated rear hanger is firm and secure, and the plaque is structurally solid without deep dents, warping, or metal tears.
