Overview
A vintage set of six hand-painted wooden nesting dolls. The largest doll opens to hold the next one, and so on down to a small solid doll at the center. Each doll wears a headscarf tied at the chin, a long dress and a decorated apron panel with dotted rosettes and leafy sprays, with floral sprigs painted on the scarves and backs. The colors change from doll to doll through blue, red, turquoise, green, orange and pink, and each has blushed cheeks and large painted eyes. The outer doll holds a handkerchief and stands on a black-painted base. The set looks good lined up on a shelf, mantel or desk.
Background
Nesting dolls, or matryoshka, have been a well-known Eastern European folk craft since the late 19th century. Each doll is turned on a lathe and painted by hand. This set is unsigned. The underside of the largest doll is unpainted turned wood with a faded pink ink mark that can no longer be read.
Condition
Good vintage condition, and the set of six is complete. There is light wear to the paint, small paint chips at some of the seams and light surface marks, plus tool marks and rough grain on the unpainted underside. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The largest doll is about 7 x 3 x 3 inches (H x W x D). The full set weighs 7.8 oz.
