Overview
A vintage silverplate casserole holder with its clear Pyrex 2-quart baking dish. The rectangular frame has a pierced gallery of interlocking ovals, a twisted rope border along the top edge, and four scrolled shell feet. Two curved handles with gadrooned, leaf-tipped grips sit at the ends. The glass dish lifts out, so it can go from the oven into the holder for serving at the table. It suits a buffet, holiday dinner or sideboard, and the frame also works on its own as a footed serving tray.
Background
Silverplate holders made to carry glass baking dishes were a common part of American table settings through the mid-20th century. The frame is stamped inside the rim with three marks: a bird, a crescent "C" and a lion. No maker's name appears. The glass dish is marked on the underside "232 2 QT. Trade Mark 21 Pyrex Made in U.S.A. Ovenware". The set weighs 4 lb 9.4 oz together.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The silverplate frame has light tarnish and scratches, with the handles and feet attached. The Pyrex dish shows light utensil scratches inside from use. Please see all photos.
