Overview
A vintage silverplate covered serving dish with a divided clear glass liner. The rectangular frame has a pierced gallery of interlocking ovals, a beaded top edge and four scrolled feet. Two ornate scroll handles with shell and flower details sit at the ends. The flat lid is topped with a cast finial of a grape cluster on a vine leaf with a curled tendril. The glass liner is split into two sections, each with a swirled starburst pattern pressed into the base. It works for butter, jams, relishes or olives, and also makes a handsome lidded box for a dresser or bar cart.
Background
Covered silverplate servers with glass liners were a common part of American table settings through the mid-20th century. The frame is stamped inside the rim with three marks: a lion, a "C" and a bird. No maker's name appears. The set comes in three pieces, frame, glass liner and lid, and weighs 2 lb 1.2 oz together.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The silverplate has light tarnish and surface scratches, most visible on the lid, with darker tarnish in the recesses of the handles and finial. Please see all photos.
