Overview
A large vintage carved wood board from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, with two long faces stacked one above the other. The upper face wears a carved headpiece and has round peg eyes, a long hooked nose and a pointed chin. The lower face has peg eyes, a chevron-shaped nose and a pointed tip. Both are painted in black with rows of white dots, yellow bands and white sawtooth borders down the sides. The paint is worn in many places, showing the bare wood beneath, which gives it a weathered look. It has a wire hanger on the back and makes a strong statement piece on a wall or leaning against one.
Background
Carved and painted boards and masks with long faces, dot patterns and bold borders are a well-known form of Sepik River carving. This piece is unmarked. It is carved from a single long piece of wood with hand-tool marks on the back, and it weighs about 10.2 lb.
Condition
Vintage condition with clear age and wear. A long split runs up the lower point on the back. There is a crack through the brim of the top headpiece with a small raised sliver of wood, smaller age cracks elsewhere, and paint loss throughout. Two small screws with a wire hanger are fixed to the back. The piece is stable, but please see all photos for the cracks and wear.

It is 40.5 x 7 x 4.5 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 10.2 lb.
