Overview
A vintage wind-up music box with a Swiss Reuge movement that plays "As Time Goes By." The lid has a burl wood veneer with a light-colored floral and scrolling vine inlay, framed by a fine line border and a pale wood edge. The rounded case is also burl veneer with a high-gloss finish, a brass keyhole on the front and four small brass feet. Inside, a brass piano hinge opens to a pink velvet-lined interior with a large compartment and a smaller one. It suits a dresser, vanity or shelf, and it works as a small jewelry or keepsake box.
Background
Inlaid wooden music boxes fitted with Swiss movements were popular gifts and vanity pieces in the later 20th century. This one has the original Reuge label on the underside, reading "Reuge, Swiss Musical Movement" with the song title "As Time goes by," and the winding key is stamped "Reuge." There is no other maker or country mark on the box.
Condition
Good vintage condition, and the movement winds and plays the song all the way through. There are light scratches and a few small pale dings in the finish on the front, some wear and pilling to the velvet in the smaller compartment, and an empty screw hole inside the lid. There is no key for the front lock. Please see all photos.
