Overview

A vintage Portuguese terracotta set of a lidded stew pot and a matching serving dish, both decorated in white slip on a glossy orange-brown glaze. The pot is hand-lettered "Caldeirada à Fragateiro" across the front, with a zigzag band on the back, two small lug handles trimmed with white dots, and a lower band of white arches and fan-shaped leaves. The domed lid has a button finial ringed in white, with leaf and arch decoration and a dotted rim. The serving dish has a soft four-lobed shape, a dotted rim and the same band of arches and leaves around the outside. Together they suit a kitchen shelf, open cabinet, sideboard or rustic table setting.

Background

Caldeirada à fragateiro is a traditional Portuguese fish stew linked to the fragateiros, the boatmen of the Tagus River, and pots lettered with dish names like this were made in Portuguese pottery towns for the home and tourist market. Both pieces have the same round ink stamp on the base reading OBAR, CRUZ LÉGUA and PORTUGAL. Cruz da Légua, near Porto de Mós in the Leiria district, is a known pottery village. The pot is numbered 130.A.0 and the dish 145.0 in black paint, and the set dates to the mid to late 20th century.

Condition

Good vintage condition with no significant damage to the pot, lid or dish. There is fine crazing in the white slip decoration, uneven glaze and kiln marks on the bases, and light wear from use. The glaze has not been tested, so we offer the set as display pieces. Please see all photos.

Dimensions & Weight

The lidded pot is 7 inches high (to the top of the finial) and 6 inches wide. The serving dish measures 7.5 x 7.2 x 3.2 inches (L x W x H). The set weighs 4 lb 13.4 oz in total.
