Overview
A vintage Portuguese terracotta assa chouriço, or clay sausage roaster, paired with a round terracotta plate. The boat-shaped roaster has three raised clay bars across the top and is hand-lettered "ASSA CHOURIÇO" in white on the side, below a black band with white dotted arch decoration. The plate has a glossy orange-brown glaze, a band of white slip arches and fan-shaped leaves around the rim, and a dotted white edge. Together they suit a kitchen shelf, open cabinet, sideboard or rustic table setting.
Background
The assa chouriço is a traditional Portuguese table piece: a little spirit is poured into the base and lit, and a chouriço sausage is roasted over the flame on the clay bars. The plate has a round ink stamp on the base reading OBAR, CRUZ LÉGUA and PORTUGAL. Cruz da Légua, near Porto de Mós in the Leiria district, is a known pottery village. The roaster base is unmarked. Both pieces date to the mid to late 20th century.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no significant damage. The roaster has light wear to the black band and rim from use, and its interior is unglazed. The plate has fine crazing in the white slip and light wear on the base. The glaze has not been tested, so we offer the set as display pieces. The wooden plate stand shown in one photo is a prop and is not included. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The plate is 8 inches in diameter. The roaster measures 7.2 x 4 x 1.3 inches (L x W x H). The set weighs 1 lb 8.7 oz in total.
