Overview
A large vintage silver-plated tree and well meat platter marked Portsmouth. The center carving bed has a raised tree pattern whose branches channel juices down into a well at the base. Two long side compartments flank the center for vegetables or sides. The rim has a gadrooned rope-style border, and there are two open scroll handles. Use it for holiday roasts and family dinners, or display it on a sideboard or bar cart.
Background
Tree and well platters were made to carve and serve roasts at the table while catching the juices. The underside is stamped "Portsmouth", "Trade Mark" with a script monogram, "Silver Plate" and ".P.C. 979".
Condition
Good vintage condition with no dents or warping, and both handles are solid. The plating is worn through in places in the center carving bed, showing copper-colored metal beneath. There is spotting, pitting and tarnish across the top and underside, along with light scratches from use. It has not been polished. Please see all photos.
