Overview
A vintage silverplate coffee pot by Poole, with a tall pear-shaped body that swells out at the lower half and stands on a round stepped foot. The domed lid is hinged and topped with a small urn-shaped finial with a flame-like top. The long curved spout is decorated at its base with raised scrolling leaf work, and the scroll handle has leaf detail along the top and at both joins, with two dark bands where it meets the body. The finish has a warm, uncleaned tarnish with rainbow tones, and the pot suits a sideboard, buffet or bar cart, or can be polished for serving.
Background
Footed silverplate coffee pots with urn finials and leaf-decorated spouts were a common part of American coffee and tea services through the 20th century. This pot is marked on the underside "POOLE" beneath a partly worn word ending in "PLATE," for the Poole Silver Company of Taunton, Massachusetts. It is silverplate, not sterling. It weighs about 2 lb 6.8 oz. A matching Poole silverplate teapot with the same finial and handle (SKU BA-1557) is listed separately in our shop.
Condition
Used vintage condition with no dents or repairs seen, and the hinged lid opens and closes. The outside has tarnish with blue, gold and violet toning, surface scratches and light plating wear. The inside has heavy staining and mineral residue at the bottom, and the underside of the lid shows tarnish. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The coffee pot measures 10 x 9 x 5 inches (H x W x D), with the width taken from spout tip to handle. It weighs 2 lb 6.8 oz.
