Overview A charming two-piece collection of vintage Peruvian handcrafted terracotta folk art sculptures from the famous Ayacucho ceramic tradition. The set includes a detailed two-story village church/house building complete with a tiled roof, balcony figures, and geometric painted slip accents, paired with a traditional Andean musician figure playing a zampoña (panpipes) while wearing a conical chullo hat. Ideal for Latin American Folk Art collectors, Southwestern, Eclectic, or Rustic Bohemian interior displays.
Cultural & Artistic Background Originating from the highlands of Ayacucho, Peru, these hand-molded clay works represent the region's famed ceramic craft traditions, closely tied to historical retablo art and village architecture. Local artisans craft these pieces from local terracotta clay, detailing them with natural white and red earth slip pigments prior to firing. The architectural piece depicts a vibrant village scene filled with community figures looking out from arched doorways and balconies, while the musician figure celebrates traditional Andean musical heritage and regional attire. The reverse of the building structure retains a handwritten gift inscription dated October 25, 1988, providing authentic vintage dating.
Condition & Surface Character • Hand-molded terracotta structures remain solid with intact balcony railings, roof tiles, and figures. • Hand-painted white and terracotta slip coatings display authentic age-appropriate surface patina and mild handling wear. • Reverse of the building structure features a legible handwritten vintage inscription ("From MARY 10/25/88"). • Smooth, flat bases allow both freestanding sculptures to sit securely upright.
