Overview Bring regional music history and vibrant South American folk art into your home with this vintage hand-modeled clay figurine depicting a pair of traditional dueling musicians. Sculpted standing side-by-side on a unified slab base, the figures wear iconic wide-brimmed tall hats, tailored jackets, and trousers embellished with intricate hand-painted geometric lattice and floral motifs. Rendered in warm matte terracotta and natural earth-tone slips, one figure plays a curved horn while his companion plays a vertical pipe flute. This expressive statue serves as an engaging table centerpiece, mantle accent, or bookshelf ornament for Boho, Global Eclectic, Rustic, or Latin American art collections.
Cultural & Artistic Background Handcrafted in the legendary ceramic village of Quinua within the Ayacucho region of the Peruvian Andes, clay musician figurines represent a celebrated lineage of highland folk art. Local artisans hand-shape local clay before painting details using mineral-rich natural slip glazes derived from regional earth pigments. These figures depict village minstrels who perform during community festivals (fiestas) and agricultural ceremonies, wearing traditional formal attire that blends Indigenous textile patterns with colonial Spanish sartorial influences.
Condition & Surface Character • Sound structural condition with no cracks, chips, or restoration across either figure. • Warm matte finish painted in natural terracotta, ochre, grey, red, and cream slip pigments. • Intricate hand-painted geometric diamond lattice and floral scrollwork preserved across the trousers. • Integrated flat terracotta base rests sturdy and level on tabletop surfaces.
