Overview Embodying the warmth of Andean family life, this expressive vintage hand-modeled terracotta sculpture features a tight-knit gathering of mothers holding infants and young children. Finished in natural matte clay slip tones of rich earth brown, terracotta, cream, and ochre, the detailed composition depicts figures draped in traditional shawls and geometric-trimmed garments. Designed with a flat reverse and an integrated mounting aperture, this versatile piece functions as either a tabletop statuette or a wall-mounted relief for Southwestern, Boho, Global Eclectic, or Latin American folk art decor collections.
Cultural & Artistic Background Handcrafted in the ceramic traditions of the Peruvian highlands, multi-figure sculptures celebrating matriarchy and family represent a treasured form of regional folk art. Master clay artisans shape local terracotta before applying mineral slip glazes to capture regional attire—such as woven lliclla shawls and polleras (traditional skirts adorned with geometric border patterns). The depiction of cradled babies and intertwined mothers symbolizes communal strength, ancestral continuity, and maternal protection across Andean village culture.
Condition & Surface Character • Excellent vintage structural condition with all hand-sculpted faces and figures fully intact. • Natural matte slip-painted surface showcasing subtle age patina and gentle handling wear. • Integrated rear mounting aperture is securely intact for easy wall suspension. • Original gold "Made in Perú" paper origin sticker preserved on the reverse base.
