Overview

A vintage pair of Old World map globe bookends. Each small globe sits inside a printed meridian ring, mounted on a wooden L-shaped bookend with a curved top. The globes are printed with an old-style world map in amber, orange and olive green, with sailing ships, sea creatures and compass roses. The place names and ring markings are in Italian, such as Mar di India, Mar del Zur, Zona Torrida and Zona Temp. Settent. Both globes spin freely in their rings. They suit a bookshelf, desk or study.

Background

Spinning globe bookends with Old World maps were popular desk and library decor in the 1960s and 1970s. This pair is unmarked, with no maker's label or country stamp. The supports are wood with a warm brown finish, and each globe turns on small brass-tone pole fittings.

Condition

Good vintage condition. Both globes spin and both meridian rings are intact. There are light scratches, scuffs and edge wear on the wood, a few small chips to the finish on the edges, and a small dark mark on the back of one upright. The map surfaces show light wear. Please see all photos.

Dimensions & Weight

Each bookend is about 6.3 x 5.8 x 3.8 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 1 lb 5.9 oz.
