Overview
A vintage brass casket box in the shape of a long capsule, with domed ends and four small turned feet. The curved lid is decorated in relief with ancient Near Eastern scenes: a row of horse-drawn chariots with standing drivers, a row of winged lions on the other side, and above them a procession of figures in long robes carrying spears and round shields. Darker toning in the recessed ground makes the brass figures stand out. The lid lifts on a long hinge to a red velvet interior, which makes it a good box for jewelry, keepsakes or small treasures. It suits a dresser, desk, shelf or coffee table.
Background
The scenes on this box are modeled on the procession reliefs of ancient Near Eastern palaces, with chariots, guards and winged guardian beasts. Brass boxes decorated with these scenes were made as decorative and souvenir pieces in the 20th century. This box is unmarked. It is made of sheet brass with a relief-decorated lid, domed end caps, a long hinge and turned brass feet.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs seen. The lid is hinged along the back and opens to a red velvet lining. There are light surface scratches and handling marks on the brass, darker toning in the recesses of the relief, a small white mark on the front, and a small pale spot on the velvet. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The box is 3.5 x 6 x 3 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 11.2 oz.
