Overview
This vibrant hand-carved Namji (Dowayo) beaded figure displays a dynamic crouching posture and rich multi-material adornment. Perfect for Global Eclectic, Boho Chic, or modern gallery-inspired interiors, it brings distinctive texture, sculptural energy, and organic color to a shelf display, desk, or curated mantle collection.
Cultural & Artistic Background
Handcrafted by the Namji people of northern Cameroon, carved wooden figures of this tradition are historically crafted as fertility dolls (baako) and protective charms. Carved from dense hardwood, the figure features wide arcing limbs, a stylized head with a crest motif, and inset bead eyes. The torso is densely bound in rows of multi-colored glass seed beads in vivid red, yellow, turquoise, green, and white. Dried seed pod accents hang across the chest, and a braided twine skirt fringed with tubular ceramic-style beads encircles the waist.
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture is structurally sound, resting stably in a wide tripod-like stance. The underlying carved wood displays a dark, aged patina with smooth handling wear on the exposed head and limbs. The extensive glass seed beadwork, fiber bindings, seed pod charms, and fringe elements remain securely intact with light authentic age-related patination.
