Overview A vintage pair of Hawaiian carved wood tiki bookends. Each tiki stands in high relief against an L-shaped upright, with a wide open mouth lined with carved teeth, a broad nose and heavy brows, arms held straight at the sides, bent knees and toed feet on a rectangular base. A stepped crest carved with grooves sweeps back over the head and down the side, with small star and cross cuts on the top of the head, and the tops of the uprights are shaped with a wavy edge. The wood has a warm golden-brown finish with strong dark grain. They are solid and heavy enough to hold a full shelf of books, and they suit a bookcase, desk, tiki bar or a collection of vintage Hawaiiana.
Background Carved tiki bookends were popular Hawaiian souvenirs and gifts in the decades after statehood, and the open-mouthed face is the type associated with images of the god Kū. Both bookends carry the original gold foil shop label under the base: "Mike's Monkeypod Wood Carving and Jewelry, 1825 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu", with a seven-digit phone number. The bookends are solid wood, and the pair weighs over 5 lb.
Condition Good vintage condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. There is light surface wear and small scratches on the backs and edges, some darker spots on the undersides, and the foil labels are scuffed but readable. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight Each bookend is 10.2 x 4.5 x 3.5 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 5 lb 4.1 oz.
