Description
Cultural & Historical Background
Hand-chased metal chargers and decorative wall plates (Ghalamzani) are among the most revered artisanal traditions of the Middle East. Crafted by hand-hammering heavy copper, applying a silver-gray tinned wash, and carefully incising relief scenes, coppersmiths create artwork inspired by centuries of regional history and royal court art.
Measuring 11.4 inches in diameter, this impressive charger captures an iconic imperial audience scene inspired by ancient Near Eastern palace reliefs:
Enthroned Monarch Central Scene: The focal medallion displays a majestic king seated upon an elaborate royal throne (Takht). He wears a tall fluted crown and patterned ceremonial robes while holding a royal sceptre. Flanking the throne are standing imperial guards holding spears, rendered with fine pounced dotwork and intricate textured details.
Warm Bi-Color Metal Accent: Concentric bands of exposed, warm-toned copper encircle the central medallion, creating a striking contrast against the silvered tinned surfaces.
Medallion Rim Border: The outer border is chased with repeating floral and geometric medallions set within an incised geometric ground, finished with a traditional pie-crust crimped rim.
With its substantial size, rich multi-figure court motif, and warm antique patina, this decorative charger makes an outstanding wall display piece or cabinet centerpiece.
