Overview
A vintage Mexican sterling silver turtle brooch set with four oval malachite cabochons. The domed shell is outlined with engraved plate lines, and each green stone sits in a raised bezel, two on top and one on each side of the shell. The turtle has four notched flippers, a pointed tail and a small head with stamped circle eyes. The head is folded back to form a loop, so the piece can be worn as a brooch or hung on a chain as a pendant. The bright polished silver and banded green stones make it an easy piece to wear on a jacket lapel, a scarf or a sweater.
Background
Sterling silver jewelry with turquoise, malachite and other stones has long been made in Mexico, and turtles are a popular subject. The back is stamped "925" and "MEXICO"; there is no maker's mark. It is fitted with a pin and catch on the back.
Condition
Good vintage condition. All four stones are in place. There are light scratches and surface wear on the back and normal wear to the silver from use. Please see all photos.
