Vintage Japanese Silk Hanging Scroll Painting Sweetfish Ayu Maple Kakejiku

Overview
This vintage Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll) features a hand-painted composition depicting four sweetfish (ayu) gliding through clear, flowing water beneath overhanging green maple branches (aoba-momiji). Rendered in fine ink wash and natural mineral pigments on silk, the artwork embodies the poetic calm of an early summer stream. Mounted in a soft sage-green silk brocade with subtle cloud motifs, this impressive 81-inch scroll brings organic tranquility and cool elegance to Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, or modern Zen-inspired interiors. Complimentary, fully insured standard shipping is included.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
In Japanese Nihonga painting and seasonal art traditions (kigo), the sweetfish (ayu) is celebrated as a cherished harbinger of early summer. Renowned for inhabiting only the purest, crystal-clear mountain rivers, the fish symbolizes vitality, purity, and environmental harmony. The combination with fresh green maple leaves (aoba-momiji) evokes the cooling breeze of early summer along a shaded riverbank.
Crafted during the mid-20th century (Showa Era), the scroll reflects traditional mounting craftsmanship (hyōgu). The hand-painted central silk panel (honba) is set within secondary borders of patterned woven silk brocade. The lower roller bar is fitted with turned faux bone end knobs (jiku-gi) that provide ideal counterweight for wall hanging. In the lower right corner, the piece features the artist's handwritten brush signature (mei) alongside an authenticating red vermilion seal stamp (hanko).
Condition & Surface Character
The scroll remains structurally sound with an intact top hanging cord (kake-himo) and tight border stitching. The hand-painted silk panel exhibits a gentle, warm vintage patina with faint, age-appropriate foxing spots and minor horizontal creasing along the paper backing from historic storage. The sage-green silk brocade borders maintain pleasing color tone, and the roller end knobs remain securely attached.
