Deep Cultural & Historical Background Formed from lightweight turned hardwood cores, these shallow vessels reflect traditional Japanese lacquering methods (urushi-nuri). Artisans apply layer upon layer of natural lacquer sap to achieve a smooth, moisture-resistant protective shell. The exterior decoration utilizes the revered maki-e technique—delicately painting fluid designs in lacquer and sprinkling fine metallic gold powders onto the surface before curing. The iconography depicts the classic auspicious pairing of the crane (tsuru) and pine branch (matsu). In East Asian folklore, the crane symbolizes longevity, nobility, and marital fidelity, while the evergreen pine represents steadfast endurance and eternal life. Historically styled after traditional sakazuki (ceremonial sake saucers), pieces carrying the tsuru-matsu motif were crafted for celebratory banquets, seasonal rituals, and honored home displays. Condition & Surface Character Preserved in strong vintage condition with robust structural integrity across all three pieces. The raised footings remain stable, and the exterior gold maki-e artwork retains crisp lines and radiant luster. The dark interior wells exhibit light, age-appropriate surface scuffs consistent with gentle historical display.
