Overview This complete set of three vintage Japanese gold leaf (kinpaku) lacquerware bowls with matching lids showcases dramatic material contrast and master craft execution. Designed with a hand-applied, tactile textured gold leaf exterior and a deep, mirror-gloss black (kuro-urushi) interior, each vessel offers a harmonious balance of brilliance and shadow. Perfect for Japandi table settings, shelf styling, or credenza displays. Complimentary, fully insured shipping is included with purchase. Deep Cultural & Historical Background Originating in traditional Japanese lacquercraft (urushi-nuri) and leaf-gilding heritage closely tied to Kanazawa, these lidded soup vessels (wan) embody centuries of refined host traditions. The exterior gilding presents a delicate, light-refracting surface texture created by carefully applying fine leaf foil. The high-gloss black interior draws upon the aesthetic principles of In'ei Raikan (in praise of shadows), where dramatic dark-and-light contrasts elevate ceremonial dining and aesthetic presentation. Condition & Surface Character Excellent vintage condition across all six pieces (three bowls and three lids). The high-gloss black interior finish retains its glass-like reflection, while the gold foil exterior surfaces preserve their rich luster and fine textural detail. Structural rim joints, lids, and footed bases are tight, clean, and well-preserved.
