Overview A fine pair of Japanese carved hardwood netsuke miniatures, featuring a toad perched on a coiled snake alongside a proud rooster standing atop an Oni demon mask. Rich in allegorical narrative and tactile texture, these hand-carved sculptures integrate into Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, and Global Eclectic design concepts. They serve as engaging decorative accents for curio cabinets, executive desk trays, or mantel displays. Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in traditional Japanese netsuke sculpture and folklore, this dual-figure set captures legendary animal pairings. The first sculpture depicts a bumpy-skinned toad (Gama) crouching over a smooth, coiled snake (Hebi), representing the tri-fold balance of nature. The second carving shows a rooster (Tori—a zodiac motif symbolizing vigilance) perched victoriously over a carved demon mask (Oni). Both figures incorporate dual carved himotoshi cord channels on their undersides and feature an inlaid circular seal plaque with a red artist kanji mark. Condition & Surface Character Both sculptures are structurally intact, solid, and preserved without cracks, chips, or restoration. The dark mahogany-stained hardwood features deep espresso tones with warm chestnut highlights on raised surfaces. Textural contrasts—from the pebbled toad skin and coiled serpent body to the incised rooster plumage—remain crisp, enhanced by smooth surface handling wear consistent with vintage age.
