Overview
A vintage Japanese ceramic set of three pieces: a small rectangular teapot with lid, a matching lidded pot, and a rectangular shaker. The teapot and pot show a lakeside scene with pagodas, an arched bridge, ducks, a sailing boat and palm trees, in soft green, orange, yellow and blue over a brown printed outline. The shaker has pink and yellow flowers above a brown scroll border. Both lids have a brown printed border and a bright green bar handle. The cream glaze and square, boxy shapes give the set a clean mid-century look. It suits open kitchen shelving, a sideboard or a tea tray.
Background
Japan made large amounts of decorative tableware for Western buyers in the mid-20th century, often with chinoiserie-style landscape scenes like this one. The shaker carries a black-and-gold "JAPAN" paper label; the other pieces are unmarked. The decoration is a printed transfer design with hand-applied colour. The shaker fills through a cork stopper in the base.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There is fine crazing in the glaze throughout and light wear to the colour along the rims and lid edges. Please see all photos.
