Overview Hand-carved from a single block of variegated olive-green and ochre-veined steatite, this vintage Inuit sculpture depicts an Arctic owl (Ukpik) in a seated pose. The piece displays expressive facial contours with broad, incised eye rings, a blunt beak, and folded wings resting against its body. Compact yet heavy in hand, this ethnographic bird carving serves as a striking accent for shelf arrangements, executive desk displays, or mid-century art collections, complete with complimentary, fully insured standard shipping. Deep Cultural & Historical Background In Inuit oral tradition and material culture, the owl (Ukpik) holds significant symbolic weight as a guardian spirit, a symbol of wisdom, and a master hunter capable of navigating the harsh Arctic tundra. Indigenous artisans across Northern communities—such as Kinngait (Cape Dorset) and Sanikiluaq—traditionally used local stone, hand-rasps, and abrasives to bring these avian spirits out of the raw mineral matrix. This piece features a hand-inscribed artist signature across the underside of the raw stone base, reflecting the individual hand of the carver within the broader modern Inuit art movement. Condition & Surface Character The stone displays structural integrity with natural mineral color variations ranging from deep forest green to warm rust and golden-tan veining. The polished facial plane contrasts gracefully with the subtle, hand-carved tool marks across the body and back. Light surface friction scuffs and faint abrasions along the underside base remain consistent with authentic vintage age and material composition.
