Overview
A rare 4-piece set of vintage Indonesian studio art pottery dishes created by the historic Tjipaganti atelier in Bandung, West Java. Dating to the mid-20th century (c. 1950s–1960s), each earthenware piece is individually hand-painted in expressive black line illustration accented with terracotta-red and palm-green enamels over a warm cream ground. The set includes three round plates and one oval platter featuring illustrative Javanese narrative motifs: hand-loom textile weaving (tenun), village market vendors, a couple under a parasol with a rooster, and a graphic diagonal bamboo pattern.
Cultural & Artistic Context
Operating in the famous Tjipaganti district of Bandung, the Tjipaganti studio was renowned for its mid-century decorative pottery documenting everyday Indonesian folk life and material culture. The underside of each dish features the deeply impressed studio mark "Tjipaganti BANDUNG 10" beneath a stylized logo. Notably, three of the pieces retain their original red-bordered paper shop labels written in early Indonesian Rupiah (Rp 37,50 and Rp 50.-), providing exceptional historical provenance.
Condition & Surface Character
• Excellent structural condition across all four pieces with no chips, cracks, or modern structural repairs.
• Features an authentic, uniform fine age crazing throughout the glaze layer, characteristic of mid-century Southeast Asian art pottery and highly sought after by collectors.
• Bold, well-preserved hand-painted enamel illustrations; undersides show clean glaze borders, kiln stilt marks, and original period price stickers.
