Cultural & Historical Background Rooted in the celebrated metalworking traditions of Northern India—particularly renowned crafting hubs such as Moradabad and Jaipur—hand-chased brassware embellished with vibrant enamel inlay represents a pinnacle of regional decorative art. Historically designed for courtly banquets and ceremonial hospitality, slender tall-necked ewers (aftaba) were traditionally paired with decorative basins and vessels to serve water, spiced tea, or aromatic rosewater to honored guests. This striking two-piece ensemble features a 16-inch hinged-lid ewer and a matching 8-inch flared bud vase. Both pieces are crafted from solid yellow brass and densely engraved with scrolling floral vines (meenakari-style aesthetic influence), botanical tendrils, and classic teardrop cartouches. Master artisans hand-chased the detailed outlines before filling the recessed motifs with rich polychrome enamel in vivid crimson red, teal green, deep blue, and ivory white, creating a brilliant jewel-toned contrast against the radiant brass. Vintage Condition Notes Both items are preserved in solid vintage condition. The enamel infill across both the ewer and vase remains remarkably bright, vibrant, and complete, showing only minimal surface wear consistent with age. The brass surfaces retain a soft warm patina with light natural tarnish in the recessed joints. The ewer's hinged finial lid operates smoothly and securely, and the underside of the vase base features an authentic incised maker's origin stamp reading "INDIA 39C."
