Overview A vintage Indian carved wood architectural figure of a woman standing beneath a column capital. She raises her right arm to the capital, which is carved as a lotus bud topped with a beaded band and a pierced cross-pattern border, and her left hand holds a looped sash at her waist. She wears a tall tiered crown, tasseled ornaments at the sides of her head, braided hair, layered necklaces, ringed armlets and bangles, and a long pleated garment over draped trousers, with anklets at her feet. She stands on a stepped base carved with lotus leaves and a checkered border. The wood has a warm reddish-brown finish that is darker in the recesses. It suits a shelf, mantel or wall display.
Background Carved female figures supporting a capital were a common feature of Indian woodwork, used on doorways, pillars, cabinets and furniture. This piece has a flat, uncarved back with two small mounting holes, which shows it was made to be attached to a larger structure. It is unmarked, and the figure is not identified as a specific deity. It is the mirror-image partner of our listing BA-1578, which raises the opposite arm. Buy both for $169: add both to your cart and the discount applies automatically at checkout.
Condition Good vintage condition with no significant cracks, chips or repairs. There is light surface wear, small scuffs along the carved edges, and some variation in the finish. Please see all photos.
