Overview
A vintage hand-carved wood fruit bowl with a working music box built into the base. The round bowl is carved inside with large overlapping grape leaves with finely scored veins, three raised clusters of grapes, and pierced openings between the leaves around the edge. The rim has a band of small notched carving, and two looped handles are carved with the same notched texture. The bowl sits on a turned round base with a scalloped band, resting on three small turned feet. Lifting the bowl lets the stop pin underneath drop and the tune plays; setting it back down stops it. The wood has a warm medium-brown finish, and the bowl suits a dining table, sideboard or coffee table as a serving dish or conversation piece.
Background
Carved wooden fruit bowls with music boxes in the base were popular European souvenir pieces through the mid-20th century, and grape-vine designs like this one were among the most common. This bowl has no maker's label; the number 20 is stamped on the edge of the base. The movement sits behind a round wooden cover on the underside, held by screws through the three feet, and is wound with a brass wing key next to a brass ball-tipped stop pin.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The music box works: it winds and plays, and the stop pin works when the bowl is lifted and set down. There is a small chip with pale bare wood at the center of the leaves, light wear and scuffs on the rim, handles and underside, and light wear to the finish. No cracks or repairs. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The bowl measures 3.5 x 11 x 9 inches (H x W x D), with the width taken across the handles. It weighs 1 lb 1 oz.
