Overview A commanding Mid-Century Modernist expressionist wooden figure group, hand-carved with expressive adze tool facets depicting a mother holding her child, embraced by a supporting family figure. Standing an impressive 24.5 inches tall on integrated peg feet, this large honey-toned sculpture blends raw tactile carving with sweeping figurative lines. A remarkable centerpiece for Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Brutalist, Wabi-Sabi, and Eclectic Global interiors, perfect for floor placement, low sideboards, or entryway pedestals.
Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in mid-to-late 20th century figurative wood sculpture and modernist folk art movements, this work utilizes smooth, faceless geometry to express universal themes of maternal love, protection, and intergenerational connection. The rhythmic, visible tool marks across the entire surface showcase an authentic hand-chiseled technique closely associated with Brutalist and Studio Craft art traditions, where raw wood character and sculptor interaction remain central to the aesthetic.
Condition & Surface Character • Excellent structural integrity carved from dense, substantial timber. • Uniform hand-chiseled adze texture displaying warm amber-to-honey natural wood tones. • Sturdy stance supported by carved peg feet set into the underside of the base. • Smooth, aged finish with fine grain variations and minor natural wood character marks typical of vintage hand-carved timber.
