Overview
A vintage hammered copper planter, or cachepot, with a pair of cast brass handles. The round body has a rolled rim and two raised horizontal bands, with a dimpled hammered band around the middle. Each handle is cast as a satyr mask with ribbed ram horns that curve up and back to form the grip. The warm copper and the golden brass handles set each other off nicely. It works as a cachepot for a potted plant, an ice or wine bucket, or a holder for kindling or magazines, and it suits a console, sideboard, hearth or windowsill.
Background
Copper planters with cast brass figural handles were a popular decorative piece in the mid-20th century, and the satyr and ram horn design draws on classical wine vessels. This planter is unmarked apart from the remains of two old labels on the base. It is made of sheet copper with a vertical seam behind one handle, a flat base with a central spinning mark, and cast brass handles riveted through the sides, and it weighs 1 lb 11.1 oz.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no significant damage. The handles are firmly attached. The seam behind one handle is visible, the inside floor has darkening and spots of oxidation, the base has two partial label remnants, and there are light scratches and handling marks on the outside.
