Overview
A vintage East African hand-carved wood sculpture of a mother giraffe bending her long neck down to her calf. The mother's neck forms a deep arch over the calf, whose head rises to meet hers beneath her body. Both animals are painted with reddish-brown patches over a golden-yellow ground, with darker hooves, ears and a textured carved mane, and the mother has a long carved tail with a dark tuft. They stand together on an oval natural-wood base. The colors are warm and bright, and the composition reads well from every side. It suits a shelf, mantel, desk or a collection of African wildlife carvings.
Background
Carved and painted wildlife figures like this were made in large numbers by East African carvers through the late 20th century, and mother-and-calf giraffe groups are one of the best-known designs, closely associated with Kenyan carving workshops. This piece is unmarked and came from an estate sale. The animals and base are carved wood with a painted finish on the figures and a natural finish on the base, and it weighs about 2 1/2 lb.
Condition
Good vintage condition. One of the mother's back legs has an old repair where it meets the body; the line is visible on her right hip, and the repair is stable. There is light paint wear, small surface marks and minor roughness along the edge of the base. Please see all photos.
