Overview
Hand-hammered copper relief picture of a hunting party. Two men carry three animals hanging from a pole, a third holds a long spear, a fourth leans on a stick, and two dogs run below among grass and trees. Green patina fills the recessed areas against warm copper tones. Mounted on a red-orange burlap mat in a black wood frame.
Background
Copper relief pictures of village and hunting scenes were widely made and sold in Central Africa, especially the Congo-Zambia copper region, and this piece is in that style. The copper is shaped by hand from the back (repousse) and detailed from the front. Signed "SM" in the lower right; the artist is unidentified and the piece is undated.
Condition
Pre-owned with wear. Scratches and worn patina near the lower-right corner, with small dents and a slightly lifting edge; small tacks hold the copper to the mat. Frame has light scuffs. The back is a wood panel with a hanging wire. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
29.8 in wide x 21.5 in high x about 1 in deep (outside of frame). About 9.5 lb.
