Cultural & Historical Background
Handcrafted water ewers (aftaba) paired with matching pierced catchment basins (lelegen) hold a central place within hospitality and purification customs along the Silk Road and Near Eastern cultural hearths. Traditionally brought to guests before and after ceremonial feasts, these coordinated sets enabled refined hand-washing. Water poured from the long, sweeping spout passed over the hands and drained cleanly through the geometric openwork grate of the basin below, concealing the wastewater within the vessel's base.
This impressive two-piece set features a teardrop-form copper body with a high S-scroll brass handle, a graceful gooseneck spout, and a domed lid hinged at the handle thumbpiece. The accompanying raised pedestal basin is finished with intricate pierced geometric cutouts and a central perforated dome grate designed to hold the ewer securely in place. The interior side of the hinged lid bears an authentic stamped maker mark in traditional regional script.
Combining heavy copper body construction with cast and spun brass details, this ceremonial set reflects the enduring mastery of traditional coppersmithing. It serves as a commanding centerpiece for collectors of fine global antiquities, rustic metalwork, or grand bohemian interior design.
Vintage Condition Notes
Preserved in excellent vintage condition with a rich, authentic aged patina spanning warm fiery copper tones to deep brassy gold. Recessed openwork cutouts and seams display light oxidation, subtle verdigris accents, and soft tarnish consistent with age. The hinged lid moves smoothly, the spout and handle remain sturdily riveted, and the matching strainer basin fits the base of the pitcher cleanly.
